Developing Minerals Responsibly. Creating Value Sustainably.
Mineral development can contribute significantly to Uganda’s economic transformation when it is undertaken responsibly.
For UNMC, responsible mining means pursuing commercial and national value while giving due consideration to the environment, workers, communities and the long-term interests of Uganda.
Our Approach to Responsible Mining
Responsible mining is integrated across the mineral development cycle — from exploration and project development to production, processing and closure.
Environmental Stewardship
Mineral resources should be developed while protecting the environment and promoting responsible use of land, water and other natural resources.
UNMC supports practices that minimise environmental impacts, promote efficient resource use and encourage appropriate rehabilitation of affected areas.
Health and Safety
The safety and wellbeing of people involved in mining operations is fundamental to sustainable production.
UNMC promotes strong occupational health and safety practices, appropriate risk management and a culture of safety across its areas of participation.
Community Engagement
Mining projects operate within communities and should contribute to their sustainable development.
UNMC supports meaningful engagement with affected communities and seeks to promote opportunities that strengthen local participation and shared economic benefits.
National Participation
Responsible mining also means ensuring that Ugandans participate in the opportunities created by the mineral sector.
Through local businesses, employment, skills development, professional services and supply chains, mineral development can contribute to stronger domestic capabilities.
Governance and Accountability
Responsible mineral development requires transparency, effective oversight, compliance and sound commercial governance.
UNMC seeks to manage its interests with integrity and accountability while supporting adherence to applicable laws, standards and good industry practices.
From Extraction to Sustainable Value
Responsible mining is not only about reducing impacts. It is also about increasing the value Uganda derives from its mineral resources.
This includes encouraging:
- Value addition and beneficiation
- Local enterprise participation
- Skills and technology transfer
- Employment and economic opportunities
- Efficient and productive operations
- Long-term investment and national value
The objective is to ensure that mineral development contributes to Uganda’s broader economic and social transformation.
UNMC’s Role
As Uganda’s State commercial vehicle in the mineral sector, UNMC participates in selected mineral ventures and manages the State’s commercial interests.
Our responsibility is to support mineral projects that are commercially viable, responsibly developed and capable of creating sustainable value for Uganda.
This approach aligns mineral development with the country’s wider transformation ambitions — ensuring that investment and production are accompanied by responsible stewardship, national participation and long-term value creation.
Building a Sustainable Mining Future
Uganda’s mineral resources are a national opportunity. Developing them responsibly can strengthen industries, create employment, attract investment and support value addition while protecting the interests of future generations.
UNMC is committed to contributing to a competitive, responsible and sustainable mining sector that creates lasting value for Uganda.
