Uganda is endowed with a diverse range of mineral resources with significant potential to contribute to economic growth, industrial development and national transformation.

More than 53 mineral types have been identified in Uganda, spanning precious and base metals, industrial minerals, rare earth elements and other mineral resources. This endowment creates opportunities across the mineral value chain — from exploration and mining to processing, value addition, manufacturing and markets.

For UNMC, mineral wealth is an opportunity to create lasting economic value through strategic State participation, investment, partnerships and competitive mineral value chains.

A Diverse Mineral Endowment

Uganda’s mineral resources occur across the country and include gold, copper, cobalt, iron ore, phosphate, limestone, rare earth elements and other minerals with commercial potential.

The Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM) provides the geological foundation for understanding Uganda’s mineral potential through geological surveying, exploration, mapping and management of geoscientific information.

Gold
An important mineral resource with opportunities for responsible mining, refining, value addition and international markets.

Copper & Cobalt
Strategically important to electrical, industrial and technology value chains, including the historic Kilembe area.

Iron Ore
Presents opportunities for domestic processing and development of downstream industries.

Including resources associated with Sukulu in Tororo, with potential for processing and industrial applications.

Limestone & Industrial Minerals
Important inputs for construction, manufacturing and other domestic industries.

Minerals and Uganda’s Transformation Agenda

Mineral development is an important component of Uganda’s long-term economic transformation.

Investment, value addition and national participation in the sector can support industrial development, employment, infrastructure, technology transfer, enterprise growth and government revenue.

UNMC contributes to this agenda by participating commercially in selected mineral opportunities and working with strategic partners to develop viable projects and mineral value chains.

UNMC’s Strategic Role

As Uganda’s State commercial vehicle in the mineral sector, UNMC manages and participates in selected commercial interests in the mineral industry.
