Kampala, Uganda – August 15, 2025 – The National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U) has today announced its partnership with the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon, marked by the official handover of running kits from the marathon organizing team to the NITA-U team at the NITA-U Headquarters.

This symbolic gesture marks NITA-U’s participation in the marathon and reinforces its partnership with the event, which will also see the installation of free Government Wi-Fi at the Kikorongo Equator Monument ahead of race day on August 23, 2025.

The Wi-Fi installation is the result of recent collaborative discussions between NITA-U, the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to improve connectivity in key tourism destinations.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Director, NITA-U’s Director Technical Services, Mr. Richard Obita, noted:

“Our partnership with the Rwenzori Marathon goes beyond sports. It’s about connecting people, promoting tourism, and enabling Uganda to share its beauty with the world in real time. By installing free Wi-Fi at the Kikorongo Equator Monument, we are enhancing the experience for tourists, athletes, and the local community – ensuring they can access information, share moments instantly, and connect with loved ones.”

Amos Wekesa, Team Leader of the Rwenzori Marathon, commended the initiative:

“Tourism is about experiences – and today, experiences are shared digitally. With this new Wi Fi installation, marathon participants and visitors will not only enjoy the spectacular Rwenzori scenery but also tell their stories to the world instantly. We are grateful to NITA-U for this visionary support.”

The Kikorongo Equator Monument, a popular stopover for tourists traveling along the Kasese Fort Portal Road and near Queen Elizabeth National Park, will now serve as a digital hotspot thanks to this initiative.
