NITA-U launches free Public Wi-Fi in Bwera Town as Part of Uganda’s Digital Acceleration

Kasese, Uganda | Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The Government of Uganda, through the National

Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U), has today successfully launched Free Public WiFi in Bwera Town; marking a significant milestone in efforts to expand digital access to communities

across Uganda.

The launch event brought together high-level government officials, community leaders, technical

partners, and local residents to celebrate a key step in Uganda’s digital acceleration journey.

Bwera Town is one of the first pilot sites selected following a recent study on public Wi-Fi connectivity

by NITA-U. The intervention is aimed at boosting last-mile connectivity and improving access to digital

public services. The newly installed infrastructure includes secure, high-speed broadband access

points strategically positioned along Mpondwe Road to benefit citizens, schools, health centers, and

local government offices.

Launching the initiative, the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance (National Guidance), Hon.

Godfrey Baluku Kiime Kabbyanga, echoed the importance of community-level connectivity: “This

intervention is more than just internet access but about empowering people. When we bring

connectivity to the grassroots, we equip citizens with tools to learn, earn, and engage with

government services more easily. That is true transformation.”

In his remarks, Dr. Hatwib Mugasa, Executive Director of NITA-U, stated: “The launch of public Wi-Fi

in Bwera demonstrates our firm commitment to building a digitally inclusive Uganda. Every citizen

deserves access to affordable and reliable internet; this is the foundation for innovation, efficiency,

and service delivery across all sectors.”

This effort is part of the broader Uganda Digital Acceleration Project (UDAP–GovNet), aimed at

bridging Uganda’s digital divide and ensuring equitable access to digital infrastructure and services

across the country.

The Bwera launch is just the beginning. As the UDAP–GovNet project continues to roll out across

Uganda, NITA-U remains committed to delivering meaningful, inclusive connectivity that transforms

lives, supports public service delivery, and powers Uganda’s journey toward a digital economy. ENDS
